Sam: Mansprings

I’ve been continuing to wonder where all the single men are in their 30s. What I am looking for are man springs – places where lots of men gather together. What is most important is there must be higher ratio of men to women. This, I have to admit, is some shameless research to help out my female clients and possibly our single female readers.

Some man springs that jump to mind:

  • Indoor rock climbing - ratio 10:1
  • Live cricket games – ratio 20:1
  • Live rugby & football – ratio 20:1
  • Major cricket, rugby or football games being shown in pubs – ratio 5:1
  • Poker clubs – ratio 10:1
  • Skeet shooting – ratio 5:1
  • Business networking events: 5:1

Not so good are places like:

  • Local pub on an ordinary night – ratio 1:1
  • Car maintenance courses – ratio 1:5 (believe it or not)

Guys, can you think of any other places where blokes gather in large numbers, or perhaps in small groups? Ladies, have you come across any interesting man springs? Ratios, observations and mansprings with thinking men would also be very welcome.

Well if you're looking for a really high men to women ratio you can always try the various Comic and anime conventions. Doubt you'd find good 30+ bachelor material though since the 30+ers tend to be of the neckbeard variety...

Seriously though...
You might try various photowalking clubs/groups. The one I'm in has a mostly guys to gals ratio unfortunately.

Aren't most of them at home playing Xbox? Most of the ones I know have very special relationships with those little boxes...

I agree with all of the above.

Can I also suggest trainspotting conventions, Games Workshop stores (poss a bit young for your target group) or wargames clubs in general! Paintballing centres might be good too coz they get a fair bit of business from 'stag' do's!

Maybe on xbox live? I heard a story of a couple who hooked up through playing World of Warcraft. A girl who love video games is a very special find indeed . . . and the ratio must be about 50: 1

Skydiving. There are a lot of men among skydivers. Only problem is that ... it is really hard to have a relationship with a skydiver when you are non-skydiver yourself.

Internet business geek meets.

I've just started going and the ratio has to be about 15:1.

It's great.

Skydivers, definitely... although men who skydive think they're amazing due to that ratio.

Drum and bass, techno or breaks nights... and believe it or not lots of intelligent guys listen to dance music.

The cricket is a fantastic one. One of my good mates plays cricket and his girlfriend doesn't particularly like it... so we go and keep her entertained and flirt in the summer.

Scuba diving

Martial arts clubs. Although a lot of the men tend to be pre-attached, and you have to choose a good club to cut down on the nutters.

On the upside, martial artists also tend to be pretty grounded, sorted, and of course physically toned.

Your local golf club. Ratio anywhere between 5 and 20 to 1. Any women hanging aroung are usually old and/or minging. Well worth a shout, we look forward to seeing you!

Yelch! rock climbing? anime conventions? sky diving!???

How does knowing about these things help a single female unless she's interested in that stuff? lol

I would be a very disgruntled female if I tried any of the above...wouldn't exactly up my chances with the men lol

You'd be surprised, women who rock climb, ski etc can be very attractive. There is something about about them being outdoorsy and adventurous . . .

Scuba diving clubs, at least 6:1.

badminton clubs. Men dominate, seriously. Usually by a ratio of something like 10:1. If you look at places like gumtree badminton clubs are always desperate for women. And women who can play decently are fawned over.

Peter Gabriel/Genesis/prog rock concerts (so long as you don't mind them being 50+...)

Well, this one you probably need a contact on the inside to go to, but at Veteran of Foreign Wars clubs (bars) the ratio is like 20:1... I remember tagging along a few times when I was younger when my dad (vietnam vet) wanted to stop by to say hello to someone or have a beer or something and the testosterone was out of control overwhelming. There are a lot of iraqi vets now that go so it's not all old guys...

I vote up music and sports/martial arts; see also chess clubs and competitive card game clubs - few people who make their living playing poker are female. A lot of political groups are mostly male, too.

But I vote down videogaming. That one depends entirely on the game; if you're looking at xBox FPS players or whatever, sure (my own favourite game series has a largely male audience), but the only decent survey ever done of an MMORPG (EQ2) pegged the users at 40% female; surveys of DS Lite users in Japan have found a small majority of users are female. 75% of Sims players are female, and the Sims is the best-selling PC gaming franchise there is.

I'm not into that end of geekery myself, I'd be shocked if anime conventions got notably more male attendees than female. Comic cons, though, sure.

Judo (a martial art) has always worked for me- the ratio is usually at least 10:1, up to 20:1. As a martial art, it has one of the best male: female ratios, and the best ratio of good guys: assholes that I've found. Stay away from the brazilian jujitsu guys though- they're either insane or jerks (not all of them, obviously- but a lot of them). Of course, I always wind up thinking of them as brothers- but they have nice friends, too.

Shooting clubs. You do have to be fairly outdoorsy, and not mind wearing ear protection.

I went to one for a hen do a few weeks ago - we were the only women in there and judging by the way the men were looking at us, were the only women who'd been in there for some time.

How about the board rooms of ftse 100 companies, it's got to be 50:1 at least.

Go sailing - male to female ratio is about 15:1. Usually nice guys as well but you do get the odd plonker . . . which is true for every sport.

Most owners are usually looking for crew and if you pick carefully you can have some great times.

Of course, you have to realise that the sexy object under discussion is the boat, not you.

Don't try to meet men at a football match. Firstly, the men are there purely to watch the football and chat with their mates, they aren't looking for women.

Secondly, men are usually threatened by women who know as much about football as they do. Alot of men think football is a gentleman's pursuit and women shouldn't really be there.

I've been going to football since the eighties and have dated a fair number of football fans. Virtually all of them are more interested in their team than they are with you. I don't date men I meet at matches now, I've learned my lesson. Be on friendly terms with them, sure but it'll never work out to be anything more than that.

Onlne gaming! World of warcraft! Men outnumber women ten to one. And some really lovely relationships have come out of it.

Don't expect this kind of man to be into doing lots of DIY, though...
